Debunking 5 Staffing Myths
Over the course of a year, America’s staffing companies hire approximately 15 million temporary and contract employees. Most of them (76%) work full time. This is nearly the same number as the overall workforce (82%).
Half of staffing employees say it’s a great way to get a permanent job. Nine out of 10 said staffing work made them more employable. One-third (35%) of these employees were offered a permanent job by a client where they worked on an assignment. Two-thirds (66%) of those employees accepted their offers of permanent employment.
Numbers don’t lie, as the above statistics indicate staffing not only helps employees find full-time work it also helps companies find quality employees. So why do most companies still not utilize staffing agencies? Perhaps, some of the myths attached to staffing, let’s turn over some apple carts!
“They are all the same”
Not all staffing agencies are created equal. Yes, the process may be the same: recruit, send candidate to client, pay employee, invoice client and get paid. However, when choosing an agency, it is important companies ask them additional questions:
Personalization- how will you personalize your strategy to my company?
Screening and background checking- make sure they align with your internal guidelines
How often will you see them on site- this helps with the agency having a pulse on culture, being available to supervisors and being familiar with the position
Can they provide references from satisfied clients?
What makes them different?
Keep in mind their personality, energy and attitude!
“They charge employees for their services”
If I had a quarter for every time a potential candidate has called in and ask how much our fee is, let’s just say I would be halfway to retirement by now. My answer is always: not a single penny! It is free to apply with us and to work with us. Companies actively seeking individuals will compensate staffing agencies to find quality candidates. That’s right as an employee you get a designated team of recruiters working with you to find you employment at no cost!
“They are expensive”
Time is money. Posting advertisements, screening candidates and follow-up can eat into a company, time, production and profit. The longer a position is open, the higher the cost due to a loss in productivity and diverting resources. Outside of your short-term budget staffing can reduce overall hiring costs. You will also save on fixed payroll costs such as state and federal taxes, health insurance, workers comp, vacation time. You will also save on training and turnover as temporary workers are prescreened, reference checked and almost always have industry experience.
“They only provide temporary workers”
Most agencies will offer temporary workers, temporary to permanent workers, direct placement (helpful for management and specialized positions) and hourly recruitment help (for companies who don’t use temporary workers). I sometimes have seen a client posting for a specialized position online. When I approach them about it they say “I didn’t know you guys offered direct hire.” Which is 100% my fault! Recruiters: be sure to educate clients and clients: always ask your current vendor about the variety of services they can help with- they already know your company, culture, goals and expectations.
“They only serve warehouse/ entry level positions”
With the ever-evolving job market staffing has expanded into almost every industry:
37% Industrial
28% Office – Clerical and Administrative
13% Professional – Managerial
13% Engineering, Information Technology, and Scientific
9% Health Care
Between all the time and money saved, greater flexibility and lower risk, you stand to gain a great deal by using an agency. Even though tens of millions have become unemployed, staffing agencies are expected to nearly maintain their previous hiring levels. Next time you are in a hiring crunch, consider a staffing agency!
